Who We Are
The Sioux Lookout Area Aboriginal Management Board (SLAAMB) was established in 1991 in response to a national policy shift toward Indigenous-led employment and training strategies. As federal approaches moved away from centralized delivery, regional leaders in Northwestern Ontario saw the need for a coordinating body that could take on local responsibility for labour market programming. Following discussions among Tribal Councils, Native organizations, and community leaders, SLAAMB was formally recognized and assumed oversight of funds previously managed by the Regional Aboriginal Management Board of Ontario.
From the outset, SLAAMB’s role required balancing federal funding requirements with the logistical and administrative realities of delivering programs in Northern Ontario. That balance, informed by community direction, shaped by regional conditions, and reinforced through direct experience, has defined SLAAMB’s work since its inception and continues to guide its operations today.
SLAAMB is currently an agreement holder under the Indigenous Skills and Employment Training Program (ISETP), which runs from April 1, 2019, to March 31, 2029. It also delivers funding through the Harvesters Support Grant, which supports traditional food harvesting and sharing activities in remote communities. SLAAMB continues to support a range of employment and training priorities, including carpentry programming, community capacity development, and regionally driven skills initiatives.
